Recently, we were asked by a reader to review the NY Times Wine Club. Out of the hundreds of reviews we’ve done in the past, the New York Times Wine Club (also known as NY Times Wine Club) hadn’t been on the list! We were very excited to check out our first shipment of the Times Sampler Wine Club, especially since we received a special discount offer for our readers to sign up and redeem 50% off.

A little history: The New York Times is one of the first and longest running publications in America. Founded in 1851, it has won over 100 Pulitzer Prizes in many categories relating to journalism. The print version still remains the largest metropolitan newspaper in the United States. The New York Times Wine Club sources from over 13 countries and boasts that 15% of their wines are exclusive to them alone (although we didn’t find any exclusives in our shipment).

The first shipment arrived about one week after placing the order. This is one of the faster shipments we’ve gotten from a wine club. Sometimes it has taken three weeks to a month to receive the first shipment, but it is usually worth the wait.

The packing slip:

Overall Rating: ★★★★

The NY Times Wine Club is one of our top picks so far this year. The incredibly fast shipping was really a highlight and the wines were all very well packaged with decent educational material. The price was stellar with 50% off the first shipment deal, and shipping wasn’t as pricey as other wine clubs. When we compared the market value of the wines with the cost we paid, we certainly saved a pretty penny.  At full price, the club ends up right around retail cost per bottle, but with such a great variety of wines put together and selected for us, we feel it’s worth paying retail value for a “personal shopper” experience.

Wine Quality: ★★★★

The shipment we received came with 6 bottles – and of those, only 2 got a bad review from us. Most of the wines were stellar picks, with our favorite being the Luigi Drocco Lange Arneis 2012. Nothing was unsettled during shipment, nor did we taste any of the rancidity that sometimes occurs when wine bottles are left around hot warehouses, or left in the heat during shipment. The mild disappointment is the lack of guarantee (like Wine of the Month Club) so the 2 we didn’t care for won’t be easily replaced.

Wine Education: ★★★★

The best part about our New York Times Wine Club shipment was the included pamphlet with recipes to pair with each wine included in the shipment. Actual full recipes, specifying exact foods to eat with the wines. That was fantastic! Instead of guessing, it was at our fingertips.  The rest of the materials did seem to lack information about the wines themselves. Not many people read the included wine information thoroughly, but when we review we like to read everything to gauge how informative their educational booklets are. There was not a lot of content that made us feel like wine experts, but the well-paired recipes were a better alternative than Googling.

Pricing: ★★★★★

All around, the pricing for NY Times Wine Club is a great deal when paired with the 50% off promotion. Exceptional wine and shipping for the money in contrast to many other clubs. However, full retail price on this is hardly discounted, if at all. It comes out to about the same cost as buying each wine in person. Nonetheless, it’s like having a personal wine shopper, with selections you might not be able to get your hands on. You end up with great mix and variety that you might not be bold enough to try in a store. Since we have a special promotion, five stars for price.
